So copied and pasted it above. Caper plants are really temperamental and I usually have to replant seeds every fall. Yes, the fire was tragic in so many ways. As you probably figured out from the news, our county government is/was totally inept. Unfortunately they seemed to be more concerned about obeying orders and following protocol than saving lives. However, it was amazing how the citizens of Hawaii came together so quickly to help Lahaina in this tragedy.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6469372901103852041.post-88358281978836216322024-02-24T14:56:06.220-10:002024-02-24T14:56:06.220-10:00JB Kowman commented on "Growing Capers in Kih...JB Kowman commented on "Growing Capers in Kihei"
Yesterday
Wow! youve got a ton of experience after all these years.. maybe you've figured out how to keep them producing after initial harvest ! so glad to have found your blog! amazing!
hoping you were not as impacted, being in Kehei, as others near Lahaina! The best results I had were from seeds planted in November.

I planted seeds directly in potting soil. Out of maybe 16 seeds, 6 germinated and then I transplanted them into separate containers. It's easy to transplant when they're still very small.

I tried germinating seeds in the refrigerator but that didn't work very well for me as I forgot about them. I haven't tried any other methods. Caper plants can be grown from cuttings. It might be easy for you to find cuttings as caper plants are very common in the Mediterranean surrounding countries. They're big plants and require lots of water and generous amounts of fertlizer but they really produce a lot of calyxes. Mahalo for the tips! I'm going to plant wing beans for the 1st time in the fall. I haven't tried growing malabar - I'll have to trial it this fall too. The only spinich I've been able to grow here is Matador - it's available from Gourmet Seed or Seeds From Italy and it's very heat tolerant.Janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05438167207270942090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6469372901103852041.post-56718881132379787462010-09-05T09:43:54.661-10:002010-09-05T09:43:54.661-10:00Just found your blog as I searched online for rose...Just found your blog as I searched online for roselle and I love what I see! I grow in florida where we seem to have 2 seasons summer and fall lol. I will be starting my roselle in 20 gallon tubs and love this plant. Those white flowers are beautiful! If you have not tried something called malabar spinach or winged beans I would they love heat sun and humidity! The winged beans and a pernial and come back from there roots but the malabar spinach is a 6 ft vine of yummy greens that you can cook or eat in a salad! I'm enjoying your blog. But I suspect they will develop as the plant grows larger.

The summer issue of Edible Hawaiian Islands had an article about olive farming in Kula - if you didn't see it the farm's website is http://oliwatreefarms.com/

Kula could be transformed in to a gourmet agricultural growing region like Napa. Capers could easily be grown there too - especially in lower Kula where it's hot and dry like Kihei. And, caper leaves/plants are fed to hens and livestock like you mentioned. Hmmm...maybe I should buy some ag land in Kula now while it's still a depressed market!Janehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05438167207270942090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6469372901103852041.post-70120861638643709462010-09-05T06:33:12.503-10:002010-09-05T06:33:12.503-10:00Hi, Jane, that is another pretty plant, but after ...Hi, Jane, that is another pretty plant, but after reading the article you referenced, it sounds pretty tough to process, and about those thorns... Maybe there's a cultivar that's thornless?
You might have a great idea there for the more arid ag areas, since those plants sound pretty rugged. Maybe the Maui Cattle Company could graze them periodically, leaving a pasture patty or two to organically enrich the soil, keep the rows in order, then all we'd need is some way to get picking figured out. I like the idea of grapes more.
Mahalo for the nice pictures, too!Barryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15483102573957001593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6469372901103852041.post-37344073691367510552010-09-04T08:45:25.157-10:002010-09-04T08:45:25.157-10:00Hi Julie!
